Cozy Apple Cinnamon Rolls
The perfect treat to enjoy on a cozy fall day. Apple chunks and walnuts give this classic cinnamon roll a fall twist. And of course, you can’t skip the cream cheese frosting!
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think pumpkin spice might be a little overrated.
Now I’m specifically talking about adding pumpkin to everything (pumpkin baking, pumpkin drinks, pumpkin candles, I saw pumpkin protein powder the other day???). I have nothing against the actual spices that are used in a classic pumpkin pie like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, etc. These are delicious and the epitome of fall flavours. I’m just not a pumpkin gal, I guess.
All that to say, I still wanted to make a cinnamon roll recipe that was an ode to fall but just not… pumpkin-y. And so we have these apple chunk cinnamon rolls. The apples and walnut add a little extra crunch and delicious fall flavour, reminding me more of an apple crumble. So if you’re like me, and you’re not so keen on pumpkin, try out these cozy fall apple chunk cinnamon rolls! Can be made over the campfire or in the household oven.

Cozy Apple Cinnamon Rolls

The perfect treat to enjoy on a cozy fall day. Apple chunks and walnuts give this classic cinnamon roll a fall twist. And of course, you can’t skip the cream cheese frosting!
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup warm milk (2% or whole milk)
- 2 1/4 tsp quick rise yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1-2 Tbsp cinnamon
- 1 apple, cut into small chunks
- 1/2 cup walnut pieces (optional)
- 6oz cream cheese
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
Instructions
- Mix all dough ingredients, knead for 5-8 minutes until dough springs back, then cover and let rise until doubled in size. TIP: I made the dough at home before heading outdoors for ease. Highly recommend if you can do this!
- Once dough has risen, roll out into a 1/4 inch thick rectangle and spread with softened butter. Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon, apple chunks, and walnuts. Roll up on the long edge and slice into 12 rolls. Place into a large cast iron Dutch oven with the lid on. Set over the campfire on a fire grate or place 5-7 hot coals directly underneath. Place 15-17 hot coals on top and let bake for 20-30 minutes, until rolls are golden brown and cooked through. Alternatively, bake in a preheated oven at 350F for 20-30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, mix together the cream cheese frosting ingredients. Once the cinnamon rolls are finished baking, let cool slightly before frosting.
