I have been so excited to share this recipe with you all! Garlic bread is a staple in our household and after seeing different garlic bread recipes circulating social media, I thought it was time I brought a campfire-friendly recipe to the table!

The bread

I chose a sourdough loaf for this recipe, but you could easily chose any round or oval Italian-style bread (sourdough, wheat, ciabatta, etc.). I used an oval loaf and just cut off the one end to make it fit inside the Dutch oven.

Cut the bread in 1/2 inch slices horizontally and vertically to create squares. Make sure not to cut all the way through, you want the squares to remain attached to the base of the bread.

The garlic

You can definitely use fresh garlic for this recipe but I HIGHLY recommend roasting the garlic. It adds a caramelized, buttery flavour that is so.dang.delicious. Trust me. Roast the garlic.

To roast the garlic, cut off the top 5mm of the garlic bulb to expose the garlic. This will make it easier to squeeze the garlic out after roasting. Place bulb on a piece of tin foil and drizzle with a little olive oil. Wrap tightly and place close to the campfire BUT not directly in the fire otherwise it will burn. Rotate occasionally to cook evenly.

The herbs

If you have access to fresh herbs, I definitely recommend using them. They add such a pop of flavour and freshness. You can always experiment a little and try adding some fresh sage, rosemary or oregano too!

I also like to add a teaspoon of Italian seasoning to the butter mixture. Usually Italian seasoning has a mixture of onion powder, oregano, basil, garlic powder, and dehydrated vegetables in it. If you don’t have it, you could just add a little sprinkle of garlic powder, onion powder, basil and oregano. You could always leave it out completely and just have garlic and butter!
